Valid open V-belt datum-geometry result
- The model is one ordinary open V-belt drive with two grooved pulleys on parallel shafts and no idler.
- Pulley diameters and belt length use the same datum system. Outside, inside, effective, and datum dimensions are not interchangeable without profile-specific conversion data.
- The standard approximate datum-length relationship is used with the full value of π; detailed elastic stretch and exact catalog measuring conditions are not modeled.
- The larger positive root is used when center distance is solved from datum length.
- The calculated datum length is not rounded to an available catalog belt size, and installation or take-up allowance is not added.
- Power rating, belt profile, number of belts, speed, tension, slip, efficiency, flex rate, pulley groove geometry, alignment, temperature, and service life are not calculated.

Open V-belt datum-length formula
This is the standard preliminary approximation for one open two-pulley V-belt drive. The inverse mode uses:
| Symbol | Meaning | Unit |
|---|---|---|
Ld |
Calculated V-belt datum length | mm or in |
a |
Shaft center distance | mm or in |
dd |
Small pulley datum diameter | mm or in |
Dd |
Large pulley datum diameter | mm or in |
The engine uses the full JavaScript Math.PI value. Some printed manuals use 1.57 in place of π/2, so small differences from hand-calculated catalog examples are expected.
Worked datum-length example
For dd = 100 mm, Dd = 300 mm, and a = 600 mm:
- Straight and mean-circumference terms:
2 × 600 + π/2 × (300 + 100). - Diameter-difference correction:
(300 − 100)² / (4 × 600). - Calculated datum length:
Ld = 1,844.985197 mm. - Small-pulley wrap:
160.811864°. - Large-pulley wrap:
199.188136°.
The preliminary center-distance range is 0.7 × 400 = 280 mm to 2 × 400 = 800 mm, so the 600 mm input falls within the general guidance.
Selecting a catalog belt and recalculating center distance
A calculated length is not automatically an orderable belt. The practical workflow is:
- Calculate the theoretical datum length from preliminary pulley diameters and center distance.
- Select an available standard datum length for the intended belt profile from the manufacturer’s current catalog.
- Switch this calculator to V-belt datum length mode and enter that standard length.
- Use the recalculated center distance to plan installation movement, take-up, tensioning, and retensioning.
For the Optibelt manual example with dd = 280 mm, Dd = 500 mm, and a selected Ld = 4,000 mm, the full-π inverse formula gives approximately 1,383.014932 mm center distance. A result based on rounded manual coefficients can differ slightly.
Datum, effective, inside, and outside length
ISO 4184:2025 addresses classical and narrow V-belt lengths in the datum system. ISO vocabulary also recognizes datum- and effective-based pulley systems. Product catalogs may identify belts by datum length, effective length, outside length, inside length, or profile-specific designations.
Do not combine an outside pulley diameter with datum belt length merely because both values are available. Use the reference diameter and reference length specified for the same belt profile and pulley system, or apply a documented manufacturer conversion.
Center distance and wrap checks
The calculator applies Optibelt’s preliminary center-distance guidance:
Values outside that interval remain calculable but trigger a warning. The exact small-pulley wrap angle is calculated from open-belt tangent geometry; a result below 120° triggers an additional review warning because arc of contact affects rating and belt count.
These checks do not replace the manufacturer’s drive-selection process. Actual pulley outside-diameter clearance, groove dimensions, belt installation allowance, shaft movement, guarding, and tensioning must still be verified.
Engineering scope and limitations
This V1 tool excludes:
- belt profile, standard belt designation, number of belts, pulley groove count, and catalog availability;
- power, torque, service factors, belt speed, flex rate, tension, slip, efficiency, and arc-of-contact power correction;
- installation and retensioning allowance, idlers, take-up systems, alignment, vibration, guarding, and shaft or bearing loads;
- temperature, oil, water, dust, static conductivity, matched sets, wear, and service life;
- crossed, quarter-turn, V-flat, variable-speed, synchronous, ribbed, hexagonal, idler, and multi-pulley drives.
Use the result for preliminary datum geometry, then verify the selected belt and pulley combination against current manufacturer rating tables and installation instructions.
Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate V-belt length from center distance?
For an ordinary open two-pulley drive, the approximate datum length is Ld = 2a + π(Dd + dd)/2 + (Dd − dd)²/(4a), using pulley datum diameters and center distance on one consistent datum system.
Can this calculator find center distance from a known V-belt length?
Yes. Select V-belt datum length as the known quantity. The calculator uses the larger positive root of the inverse approximate formula and checks that the resulting pulley datum circles do not overlap.
Can I use pulley outside diameter in this calculator?
Not unless the belt and pulley system explicitly defines the corresponding length on that same reference system. Datum, effective, outside, and inside diameters or lengths are not interchangeable without profile-specific conversion data.
Should I order the exact calculated V-belt length?
No. Use the result to identify an available standard datum length from the belt manufacturer's catalog, then enter that catalog length in inverse mode to recalculate the nominal center distance and provide installation and take-up adjustment.
Does this calculator size or rate a V-belt drive?
No. It does not select belt section, number of belts, pulley grooves, power rating, service factor, tension, speed, arc-of-contact correction, installation allowance, or service life.
