Calculation Methodology & Sources

MechClarity provides free mechanical engineering reference calculators. Each tool describes a limited model and includes formulas, input units, example values, and source notes. A computed result is useful only when those assumptions match the problem and the input data has a defensible basis.

What does a calculator result establish?

A result describes the displayed mathematical model for the entered values. It does not establish material properties, installation quality, manufacturing tolerance, component availability, actual service life, or design approval. Some tools require an allowable stress, safety target, catalog factor, or empirical coefficient; the user must establish those inputs for the actual application.

The calculator directory separates geometry, load, stress, stiffness, life, and installation calculations. A linked tool can help with the next calculation, but its input definition and exclusions still need to be checked.

How are sources used?

Every calculator page includes references and a note describing what each source supports. Manufacturer manuals support product-specific conventions and methods. Standards references establish relevant context and scope; citing a standard does not claim full implementation, certification, or endorsement. Engineering publications and university material explain models and derivations, while unit references support conversions.

Use the current source that applies to the exact product and application. A generic relationship cannot supply a missing manufacturer factor or establish a material allowable. External sources may change location or version; their presence in a reference list is not a guarantee of continued availability.

How are software checks separated from engineering approval?

The project includes automated known-answer, unit-conversion, boundary, invalid-input, serialization, and browser-interaction checks. The calculation code is separated from the interface, inputs are normalized to canonical units, and display rounding is handled separately from calculation. These checks help detect software regressions. They are not independent certification of a component or completed engineering design.

Worked examples use the stated reference inputs. Example material properties, nut factors, load factors, and allowables are not universal recommendations. A valid-input status means that the tool can evaluate its model; warnings and application limits require separate attention.

What do the dates on tool pages mean?

Each calculator displays its recorded content review date. That date belongs to the page's documentation record; it is not a claim that an independent engineer approved a specific design or that every external source was rechecked on the same day. Changes to navigation or search metadata do not automatically change that date.

How can you reproduce or cite a calculation?

  1. Record the calculator name and page URL.
  2. Record the input values, units, solve mode, and any material or catalog factors with their own sources.
  3. Keep the result together with its assumptions, warnings, and the reference method used.
  4. When sharing a calculation URL, check the encoded input values. The canonical page URL identifies the tool, while query parameters identify a particular input case.

Calculations run in your browser. A copied URL can contain the values entered into the calculator, so review it before sending it to someone else.

Report an error or unclear assumption

Email [email protected] with the calculator URL, input values and units, the displayed result, and the expected result or supporting reference. This information makes a reported issue reproducible.
